Mornings

By Gutty Kreum

“Early mornings hold a certain kind of magic. Wherever you live, it’s possible to wake up very early and see things a bit differently. Exploring empty streets, the absence of the midday bustle gives way to a quieter experience, subtle and serene.

Ambiance is something deeply felt, though not often well articulated. My mission in developing this work is to create environments worthy of exploration and deliver a moment of tranquility and nostalgia. Mornings is a collection of digital memories exploring morning ambiance.”

Heavily influenced by urban and rural Japan, Canadian-based artist Gutty Kreum conjures nostalgia and tranquility in each of his artworks. Inspired by the video game aesthetics of his childhood and digital map walking, he skillfully crafts pixel-art illustrations of places he dreams of exploring.

Kreum's artwork has been featured in prominent platforms and exhibitions, including 'The Masters of Pixel Art - volume 3' book (both physical and digital editions), the SuperRare exhibition 'Invisible Cities,' and the 'Digital Art Exhibition' at Art Innovation Gallery during Milan Art Week 2022. Notably, Kreum's artwork has been auctioned through Sotheby's.

Gutty Kreum, an enigmatic and prolific artist, has captivated collectors with his deceptively simple pixel art landscapes. These meticulously crafted digital pieces deftly balance the mundane with the fantastical, providing a refreshing departure from traditional landscapes.

Much like the late 19th century Impressionists, Kreum’s subject selection is rooted in the familiar, complemented by a meticulously curated color palette. In place of dots or brush strokes, Kreum employs the visual language of vintage video games and subtle animation, transforming these scenes into something altogether different — a living pixelated dreamscape, inviting viewers to stay for a while.

Kreum’s latest collection, Mornings, is a testament to the artist’s vision and skill, demonstrating how pixel art can transcend its humble origins and claim a rightful place in the pantheon of fine art.
